Las tres capas tienen receptores de estr\u00f3geno. El estr\u00f3geno es un importante regulador del crecimiento y de la funci\u00f3n del m\u00fasculo liso vascular y no vascular en las capas subepiteliales de la vagina, l\u00e1mina propria y la l\u00e1mina muscular. Durante la menopausia, debido a una considerable reducci\u00f3n en el estr\u00f3geno, se produce una reducci\u00f3n en el grosor del epitelio (capas de entre ocho a diez c\u00e9lulas aproximadamente, a capas de entre tres a cuatro). La deficiencia de estr\u00f3geno afecta los tejidos vaginales y provoca p\u00e9rdida de col\u00e1geno, p\u00e9rdida de la capacidad de retener agua y adelgazamiento de la superficie epitelial. El tejido adelgazado es m\u00e1s susceptible a la irritaci\u00f3n, y la superficie vaginal se vuelve friable, con petequias, ulceraciones y profuso sangrado luego de m\u00ednimos traumas.<br \/>\nDurante el amamantamiento, las mujeres tienen altos niveles de prolactina que ejercen una acci\u00f3n antagonista sobre la producci\u00f3n de estr\u00f3geno. Por estas razones, a lo largo de la lactancia, puede ocurrir una hipoestrogenemia. Bajos niveles de estr\u00f3geno pueden causar atrofia urogenital, incluyendo adelgazamiento epitelial, menor elasticidad y flujo sangu\u00edneo vaginal disminuido. A menudo se hace referencia a los cambios vulvovaginales hipoestrog\u00e9nicos sintom\u00e1ticos como vaginitis atr\u00f3pica y se presentan t\u00edpicamente como <a href=\"https:\/\/femtouch.eu\/es\/vaginal-health\/vaginal-atrophy\/\">sequedad vaginal<\/a>, picor, ardor, irritaci\u00f3n y dispareunia.
